The award is bestowed upon athletes who have distinguished themselves in their sports field through their supreme athletic performances over the past year.Eleven-time Paralympic medalist Tatyana McFadden (Track & Field, Cross-Country Skiing) was honored with the Wilma Rudolph Courage Award. McFadden has defied obstacles since she was a young girl to become one of the most dominant athletes in Paralympic Track & Field and Cross-Country Skiing, while also advocating for equal access for students with disabilities. Tatyana and her mother helped pass Maryland Fitness and Athletics Equity for Students with Disabilities Act (2005) that mandates that schools provide competitive opportunities for students with disabilities in interscholastic athletic programs. The Billie Jean King Contribution Award, an honor that recognizes an individual or organization who has made a significant contribution to the development and advancement of women’s sports, was awarded to Dr. Don Sabo, Ph.D. a Professor of Health Policy at D’Youville College. Dr. Sabo’s pioneering research is a catalyst for the advancement of girls and women in sports and uncovers the lifelong benefits of participation on their health and well-being.“Forty-one years ago we founded an organization to recognize the accomplishments of the world’s greatest women athletes just like we are doing here at tonight’s Salute,” said WSF Founder Billie Jean King. “We have seen great momentum and breakthroughs this past year for female athletes, coaches and commentators and we came together tonight to celebrate those moments, and to commemorate the impact the Foundation has on women and girls each and every day.”Julie Foudy and Jessica Mendoza opened the fundraising gala, beginning with a celebratory toast to Jessica’s historic achievement of becoming the first female in-game analyst for an MLB game on ESPN in August. The evening then proceeded with the traditional Grand March of Athletes where all 75 athletes in attendance were honored for their contributions to their sports.Angela Hucles, WSF President, two-time Olympic Gold Medalist for U.S. Soccer, two-time World Cup Bronze Medalist, took the stage in her first Salute as President to discuss the ongoing initiatives that WSF has focused on in the past year, specifically showcasing the Sports 4 Life program. Sports 4 Life is a national effort to increase the participation and retention of African-American and Hispanic girls in youth sports programs. By making sports more accessible, Sports 4 Life gives young females the chance to learn the foundational benefits of sports, such as leadership, confidence, self-esteem, and perseverance. This year, WSF awarded $110,000 in funding to 22 grantees to serve more than 6,800 middle and high school girls across the nation. All of the money raised in the room this evening will go towards 2016 grants, which is now accepting applications for the coming year.“The Women’s Sports Foundation is dedicated to creating leaders by giving girls access to sports. With support from the community, who is on the ground activating, to the corporations who support our mission by making it financially realizable, we are able to collaborate, educate and advocate for more opportunities and exposure for girls’ and women’s sports,” shared Deborah Slaner Larkin, CEO of the WSF. “We are privileged to host the Annual Salute so we can gain new ambassadors and spread awareness about our mission to ensure all girls have the chance to play.”The 36th Annual Salute to Women in Sports was co-presented by espnW, FOX Sports, Gatorade and NBC Sports Group.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” dinosaurs ruled the box office for a second weekend in a row, but also left a little room for more modest newcomers like “Sicario: Day of the Soldado” and the basketball comedy “Uncle Drew” to over-perform in the crowded marketplace.Studios on Sunday estimate that the blockbuster sequel to “Jurassic World” earned an additional $60 million in its second weekend in North American theatres, bringing its domestic total to $264.8 million. While its second weekend drop is about 10 per cent steeper than that of the first film, worldwide, the film has grossed $932.4 million to date and is barrelling toward the $1 billion mark. The dinosaurs didn’t gobble up all the attention this weekend, however. “Incredibles 2,” now in its third weekend in theatres, took second place with $45.5 million, bringing its domestic total to $439.7 million.North American audiences came out in larger than expected numbers for both the action thriller “Sicario: Day of the Soldado” and “Uncle Drew.”The “Sicario” sequel starring Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro earned $19 million to take third place. The film, distributed by Sony Pictures, cost a reported $35 to $40 million to produce.Landing in fourth place was the basketball comedy “Uncle Drew,” which features NBA All-Stars Kyrie Irving and Shaquille O’Neal. With a production price tag under $20 million, the film exceeded expectations grossing $15.5 million and got audience stamp of approval with an A CinemaScore. The ad and marketing campaign included spots during the NBA playoffs and finals, a Wheaties box featuring Irving as Uncle Drew, and an Uncle Drew capsule collection from Nike.Lionsgate, which distributed the movie, knew the film had built-in marketability because of the celebrity of the stars, but was also pleased to discover that the film in early screenings appealed to non-basketball fans too.“That was the surprise, that wow, we have a picture that really plays to a general audience,” said David Spitz, Lionsgate’s president of domestic distribution. “It has a really sweet message.”The A CinemaScore, which suggests that the film will have good word-of-mouth buzz, could bode well for the film over the Fourth of July holiday and into the rest of the summer.“We’re hoping it’s the old adage, ‘It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon,’” Spitz said.Lower down on the charts the Indian film “Sanju,” a biopic about Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt, earned an impressive $2.6 million from only 356 screens in its opening weekend. And the Fred Rogers documentary “Won’t You Be My Neighbour?” now playing on 654 screens, continues to do well in its expansion. It added $2.3 million to its earnings this weekend. After two weekends of $100 million plus movies, this past weekend provided a little blockbuster break before “Ant-Man and the Wasp” opens this week. But even without a record-breaker or a $100 million movie, the box office is still up 15.3 per cent from last summer’s abysmal performance and 9.3 per cent for the year overall.“We can’t have every weekend like the last two weekends,” said comScore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian.“The theatrical box office is on a major roll right now,” Dergarabedian added. “This puts to bed any notion that the summer movie season has run its course. Audiences want to go out to the movie theatre during the summer season.”Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theatres, according to comScore. Beijing: A Chinese official accused “anti-China forces” in the West of using Christianity to subvert the country’s political power and said worshippers must follow a Chinese form of religion. China’s officially atheist government, which oversees religious groups through state-sponsored institutions, has tightened its grip on all faiths in recent years. “Anti-China forces in the West are attempting to continue to influence the social stability of our country through Christianity, and even subvert the political power of our country,” Xu Xiaohong, chairman of the state-backed National Three-Self Patriotic Movement Committee, which oversees the Protestant churches, said on Monday. Also Read – Imran Khan arrives in China, to meet Prez Xi JinpingSpeaking at the annual gathering of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), a largely ceremonial advisory body, Xu described the introduction of Christianity in China as “accompanying the intense colonial aggression by the West”. Only by incorporating Chinese culture into Christianity would the religion become something Chinese people could identify with, said Xu. For those who “subvert national security in the name of Christianity, we support the country in bringing them to justice,” he added. Also Read – US blacklists 28 Chinese entities over abuses in XinjiangHis remarks come days after the US envoy for religious freedom, Sam Brownback, said the Chinese government was “at war with faith”, persecuting Muslim Uighurs, Tibetan Buddhists, Christians and Falungong practitioners. In China, Protestants are split between unofficial and state-sanctioned churches, where Communist Party songs also feature in the order of service. Over the past year, unofficial “house” or “underground” churches have faced increasing pressure, with some church members detained under subversion charges. In December, the pastor of the Early Rain Covenant Church, a prominent unofficial Protestant congregation in southwest Sichuan province, was detained in a police raid under charges of “inciting subversion of state power,” according to the church. In September, Beijing officials also shut down Zion Church, one of China’s largest unofficial Protestant churches, for operating without a licence in the capital – before ordering it to pay back 1.2 million yuan (USD 170,000) in rent and removal costs. Catholics – who are similarly split between official and underground churches – Muslims and Buddhists have also faced increasing pressure to toe the party line.
Kolkata: Delhi’s Honey Baisoya may not have matched his score of 64 from the first two rounds but the 22-year-old, in his own words, came up with his most satisfying effort of the week on day three, a five-under-65 that helped him extend his lead at the inaugural Bengal Open Golf Championship on Thursday. Honey (64-64-65), the overnight leader by one, is now two shots ahead of the field at 17-under-193 going into the final round of the 2019 TATA Steel PGTI season’s fourth event. Also Read – Dhoni, Paes spotted playing football togetherBangladesh’s Badal Hossain (63-66-66), moved from overnight tied second to sole second as a result of his 66 on Thursday that took his total to 15-under-195 at the Rs. 30 lakh event. Badal’s compatriot Md Zamal Hossain Mollah also made waves by matching the tournament’s best round of 62, earlier shot by first round leader Karan Pratap Singh of Faridabad. Zamal thus took a flight from overnight tied 39th to 12th place at 11-under-199. Baisoya made a positive start on day three with a birdie on the first but then had a bumpy ride till the 13th as he kept missing fairways. Baisoya’s first setback came on the third where he three-putted from six feet for a double-bogey. But despite his hitting form deserting him, Honey still managed birdies on the fourth, sixth and seventh courtesy some high-quality approach shots and putting. The six-time winner on the PGTI made a couple of fabulous recoveries from the trees to bogey the ninth and extract a birdie on the 13th. He also registered two good par saves on the 11th and 12th. Baisoya finally ended the day on a high by making birdies on the 14th, 15th and 17th after landing his wedge shots within five feet on all three occasions. Badal Hossain struck a second straight 66 after making seven birdies and three bogeys to stay in the hunt for his maiden PGTI title. He made six birdie conversions from a range of 10 feet but had a disappointing three-putt bogey on the 17th that pushed him two shots behind the leader. Also Read – Andy Murray to make Grand Slam return at Australian OpenDelhi’s Rashid Khan, the winner in Chittagong last week, had a flying start with birdies on the first three holes. However, on the back-nine he posted two birdies and two bogeys to end up with a 67 and therefore slip one spot to tied third at 14-under-196. Rashid, whose last four rounds had been error-free, continues to be in contention for back-to-back titles in two weeks. Pune-based Udayan Mane carded a 64 to climb eight places and join Rashid in tied third. Shankar Das (64) was the highest-placed Kolkata golfer in tied fifth. Das shared fifth place with round one leader Karan Pratap Singh (68) of Faridabad at 13-under-197. Md Zamal Hossain Mollah struck it well to set up an eagle on the starting 10th and six other birdies en route his spectacular 62. He also drained as many as three putts from a range of 10 to 20 feet. Kolkata’s Sunit Chowrasia (68) outscored his legendary uncle SSP Chawrasia (69) as the duo played in the same group for the first time in a professional event. Sunit closed the day in tied 17th at eight-under-202 while SSP was a further shot back in tied 23rd.

Christie also admitted that when the Supreme Court Justice Milton Evan ruled the government either pay the outstanding overtime or give officers the equivalent in time off back in 2015, Nottage had to fight him to have the officers paid. Christie was leaning towards the idea of time off for the officers but Nottage fought back saying no.Christie also revealed that Dr. Nottage had planned to announce the overtime to finally be paid to officers at the PLP rally at R.M Baily Park in April, however he fell sick while on stage.Christie also said that Nottage was always very supportive of the force and fought hard for the compensation they have now received. Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp#Haiti, March 4, 2018 – Port-Au-Prince – Prime Minister, Dr. the Hon. Hubert A. Minnis said he “expects to see” certain fruits and vegetables from the Republic of Haiti being directly imported into The Bahamas by as early as December 2018, as a result of discussions with Haiti’s President, His Excellency Jovenel Moise. The move is expected to impact the large quantities of fruits and vegetables already being imported into the country (particularly mangoes) from second and sometimes third countries and/or entities that purchase the produce from Haiti in the first instance before exporting them to The Bahamas. Bahamian officials say this process adds to costs for Bahamians. The Prime Minister’s announcement came during a Joint Press Conference that followed a High-Level Meeting between Prime Minister Minnis and President Moise. The expected outcome is contingent upon the potential direct imports meeting standards set by The Bahamas’ Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources. The Government of The Bahamas, under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources, recently established a Standards Bureau to ensure the safety and security of marine and agricultural imports into the country.[Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources, the Hon. Renward Wells, participated in the High-Level Meeting along with the (Acting) Director of Agriculture, Mr. Gregory Rahming.]Bahamian officials say other benefits could include reduced costs on fruits and vegetables for Bahamian consumers and businesses.“President Moise has said to his Minister of Agriculture that by December 2018, he wants to see fruits and vegetables from Haiti — meeting all the criteria and conditions that we spoke about — flowing into The Bahamas,” Prime Minister Minnis said.“I want to paraphrase [the] President, and this is to my Minister of Agriculture the Hon. Renward Wells, that you have been given the Green Light, you must go; do not allow the Orange light to come on because after that it is the Red Light, and I do not want you to become history.”Prime Minister Minnis said purchasing fruits and vegetables directly from Haiti “cuts out that number two and that number three man, thereby allowing for the purchase of quality products directly from the source.”The ability to purchase quality fruits and vegetables directly from Haiti rather than second and third countries and/or entities, should impact Bahamians at the checkout lines.By: Matt Maura (BIS) Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp Related Items:

Since its inception in 1999, Blender magazine has tried to distinguish itself as an alternative to the Rolling Stone establishment of rock journalism. Now it appears to be following Rolling Stone in blurring the advertising-editorial line.In its January-February issue, Blender published the “2008 Rock & Roll User’s Guide,” a 16-page new music preview sponsored by Sync, Microsoft’s in-car voice-activated technology. In it, a small logo that reads “Presented by Sync/Powered by Microsoft” appears on five of the section’s 10 editorial pages, with the other six pages devoted to Sync-related ads. Four of those logos ask readers to log onto fordvehicles.com/sync for free MP3 downloads. “I would say that this is a clear violation of our guidelines,” American Society of Magazine Editors executive director Marlene Kahan told FOLIO: on Monday. According to the American Society of Magazine Editors, “sponsorship language (ie, “sponsored by,” “presented by,” etc.) should not appear in connection with regularly occurring editorial features” unless the editorial content “is labeled ‘Advertisement’ or ‘Promotion’ in a type size as prominent as the magazine’s normal body type.” [SEE: ASME Guidelines.]A spokesperson for Blender said the section was purely editorial and that the preview was written prior to selling the sponsorship. A spokesperson for the Alpha Media Group, the owner of Blender and Maxim, declined to comment on the details of the sponsorship, and said that the company is commited to adhering to the guidelines set forth by ASME.The Blender feature comes on the heels of a class action lawsuit filed by 185 indie rock bands in December against Rolling Stone over a sponsored nine-page pull-out spread that the bands said used their names without permission.Five of those bands represented in the class action suit appear in the Blender preview. Representatives for My Morning Jacket, one of the bands appearing in both, declined to comment. The Rolling Stone suit followed a separate lawsuit filed by attorney generals in eight states against R.J. Reynolds—the section’s sponsor—claiming the company illegally used cartoons in an advertorial to sell cigarettes. Rolling Stone said the cartoons were part of its editorial treatment—and not R.J. Reynolds’ idea.RELATED DISCUSSION: Does Anyone Care About ASME Guidelines?

Vijay Varma is a name that needs no introduction. Delhi Belly, Dedh Ishqiya, Monsoon Wedding and the latest Gully Boy is a testimony to the powerhouse performer he is. Sinking into the skin of the character, Vijay Varma brings out any character with utmost authenticity and honesty. In continuation of the trend, Vijay Varma has transformed himself as a college student from the 90s for his film – Hurdang.Acing the part of a 90s college student from Allahabad, Vijay is doing his best to add his own nuances to the character. The actor who is currently working on Hurdang in Prayagraj. He is feeling the thrill of working on a period film and though the film isn’t a classic period film, the fact that it’s set in the 90s requires major prep from him, a challenge he has taken up well enough. From understanding the social scenario of the era to its very politics, the actor has undergone a makeover after a few rounds of changes. To be era authentic, Vijay has even grown a moustache. Depending on his character requirement and background, Vijay decided to have a cleaner look. Vijay went through a series of look tests, exchanged notes with the director on how to add to his look. The actor says, “We arrived at the final look after many trials. We wanted to get the milieu right and took references from many real-life personal pictures from the late 80s which the team had gathered for mood boarding.””Sheetal Sharma is the designer on this film and we worked closely over many trials to get the vibe of Loha Singh right. Power and leadership are his main trials and we made sure it reflects in the styling. The script has a lot of answers in explaining the political scenarios of the 1990 and what was the general sense of response by these characters to the times they were living in. Discussions and looking up on history helped in making it more nuanced instead of settling for a uni-dimensional approach to the period,” Varma added.

A US diplomat has been expelled from New Zealand after Washington refused to waive diplomatic immunity so police investigating a serious crime could question him, officials said.Details of the alleged crime have not been revealed but local media reported the diplomat left the South Pacific nation last week suffering a broken nose and black eye.Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully said he was “disappointed” at the US refusal to waive immunity and in response asked for the person’s withdrawal from New Zealand.”Officials in Wellington and our ambassador in Washington DC have clearly conveyed to the United States the expectation that foreign diplomats obey the law in New Zealand and are seen to face justice in New Zealand,” he said in a statement released to AFP Monday.Police said they were called to an incident in Lower Hutt, on Wellington’s outskirts, in the early hours of March 12, which “involved an individual from the US embassy in Wellington”.By the time they arrived the person had left the scene and no arrests were made.Attempts to further investigate hit a diplomatic brick wall.McCully said foreign affairs officials relayed a police request to waive immunity but their US counterparts refused.Local media named the diplomat as Colin White and said he left Wellington with his wife and children.TVNZ, which broke the story, reported that White was a technical attaché who had been working closely with New Zealand’s intelligence service, the GCSB.A spokeswoman for the US embassy said they were “communicating with New Zealand authorities” on the issue.”As a matter of policy, we do not comment on the specifics of matters under investigation,” she said in a statement.”We take seriously any suggestion that our staff have fallen short of the high standards of conduct expected of US government personnel.”McCully said the US had stated it always fully investigated all allegations involving its diplomatic staff.Diplomatic immunity, formalised in the 1961 Vienna Convention, means foreign envoys are protected from local law enforcement in the country to which they are posted. The most recent known case of it being invoked in New Zealand was in 2014, when Malaysian military attaché Mohammed Rizalman bin Ismail was accused of indecent assault. It was eventually revoked and Rizalman was sentenced to nine months’ home detention after being found guilty in a Wellington court.

The insurgent group did not immediately comment.Naem Musamim, Faryab’s public health director, said 14 bodies and 39 wounded people including four children had been taken to local hospitals. Some victims with critical injuries were airlifted to hospitals in Mazar-i-Sharif in Balkh province. The deadly incident comes as the war between the Taliban and Afghan security forces rages on, even as Taliban officials are meeting with US negotiators in Doha in a bid to bring about an end to the conflict. On Sunday, the insurgents will meet in the Qatari capital with various representatives from Afghan society as part of a potential peace process.
