Jury orders Rams to pay 125 million for Reggie Bush injury

first_imgJury orders Rams to pay $12.5 million for Reggie Bush injury AP June 13, 2018 Posted: June 13, 2018 Categories: Local San Diego News, Trending FacebookTwittercenter_img Updated: 10:39 AM ST. LOUIS (AP) — A jury in St. Louis on Tuesday ordered the NFL’s Rams to pay former running back Reggie Bush $12.5 million for a severe knee injury he suffered in 2015, the team’s final season in St. Louis before moving to Los Angeles. The jury found the Rams 100 percent liable for Bush’s injury and ordered the team to pay $4.95 million in compensatory damages and $7.5 million in punitive damages, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.Attorneys for the Rams said they plan to file a motion for a new trial.Bush was playing for the San Francisco 49ers when he was pushed out of bounds during a game on Nov. 1, 2015, at what was then the Edward Jones Dome, now known as the Dome at America’s Center. He slipped on a surface that the lawsuit dubbed the “concrete ring of death,” about 35 feet (11 meters) behind the 49ers’ bench.Bush suffered a season-ending left knee injury. The lawsuit contended the injury undermined his earnings as a player for the rest of his career. He signed with Buffalo in 2016 and retired in 2017. Now 33, he works as an analyst for the NFL Network.“Reggie lost his ability to do what he loved, and to bargain for a contract that he worked his entire life for,” Bush’s lawyer Tim Cronin said during closing statements. “These players get chewed up. They only have so many chances.”Bush also sued public agencies that own and operate the dome, but a judge dismissed them from the suit last week after ruling that the team had control of game-day operations.Just a week before Bush’s injury, Cleveland Browns quarterback Josh McCown slid across the same concrete stretch and injured his shoulder. The concrete surface in the dome was covered with rubber padding two weeks after Bush was injured.Rams attorney Dan Allmayer said the team should not be held responsible for Bush’s injury because it could not have foreseen a dangerous condition. He noted that no one besides McCown and Bush had been injured there over 20 seasons played at the dome.Allmayer said Bush’s injury was caused by “pre-existing issues,” not the fall on the concrete.NFL owners approved the request from Rams owner Stan Kroenke to move the team to Los Angeles in 2016 AP, last_img read more

San Diego’s Old Globe is giving community members the change to become playwrights. On Tuesday, we joined the audience at a Skyline Hills senior center for the debut of a work by first time playwright Claudia Thompson. As a participant in the Old Globe’s Community Voices program, Thompson began writing about the life of Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley.Keckley was a former Virginia slave who bought her freedom from her owners, and became a dressmaker and close confidante to First Lady Mary Lincoln. The setting for the inaugural performance of the play was the George Stevens Resource Center where members were celebrating Juneteenth, a holiday that originated in Texas to mark freedom from slavery and is now observed in African-American communities around the nation.Thompson’s play about the 19th century White House dressmaker, businesswoman and philanthropist is a product of the Old Globe’s playwriting and arts engagement programs. At age 74, Thompson said she never imagined that her writing would ever make it to the stage. “It’s just extraordinary that that path was there, and I was able to walk on that path, at this time of my life,” Thompson said.Katie Harroff who teaches the community writing classes said there are many other voices waiting to be heard. “I mean Claudia is a very special woman. It takes a very special person to be passionate enough to get to this place with your writing, but the wonderful thing about these programs is we’re finding people like that all over San Diego.”Thompson’s play, “Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley” will be performed again on Sunday, June 24 at Hattox Hall at The Old Globe. Seats must be reserved for the 12:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. performances. Tickets are free! Categories: Local San Diego News FacebookTwitterlast_img read more

WikiLeaks talks central to Michael Cohens testimony on Trump

At 8:18 a.m.: Added details from Cohen’s hearings on WikiLeaks. At 8:33 a.m.: Added Cohen’s remarks on the Twitter persona “Women for Cohen.” At 9:16 a.m.: Added Cohen comments on Trump’s Twitter account. At 9:44 a.m.: Added comments from lawmakers on WikiLeaks. At 11:16 a.m.: With details on Trump’s campaign involvement with RedFinch Solutions. “A lot of people have asked me about whether Mr. Trump knew about the release of the hacked Democratic National Committee emails ahead of time. The answer is yes,” Cohen said in his opening remarks. In the prepared testimony, Cohen recalled a time when Stone told Trump he had spoken with Assange days before “there would be a massive dump of emails that would damage Hillary Clinton’s campaign.”Cohen added that Trump responded, “Wouldn’t that be great.”WikiLeaks pushed back against the allegations on Twitter, writing that it has “always denied speaking to Roger Stone.”In a statement to multiple news outlets, including Newsweek, Stone refuted the account. “Mr. Cohen’s statement is not true,” he said.Rep. Elijah Cummings, a Democrat from Maryland and the Oversight and Reform Committee chair, said the hearing originally wouldn’t take questions on the subject. However, he said the committee wouldn’t restrict questions about WikiLeaks after the prepared remarks. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who was chair of the DNC during the hack, questioned Cohen about details indicating Russian involvement with Trump’s campaign. “He had advanced notice that there was going to be a dump of emails, but at no time did I hear the specificity of what those emails were going to be,” Cohen told lawmakers, referring to the president.Rep. Jim Jordan, a Republican from Ohio, questioned Cohen on his credibility, pointing to a Twitter account, “Women For Cohen,” that the former attorney paid to tweet about his attractiveness. In response to the false persona on Twitter, Cohen laughed and smiled. He told Jordan, “We were having fun,” and said the Twitter account was a joke. The account was created by the IT firm RedFinch Solutions, which Cohen originally hired to rig results in online polls on Trump’s popularity. The firm used bots and algorithms to manipulate poll results for CNBC and Drudge at Trump’s direction, Cohen said.Cohen told lawmakers he feared for his family’s safety because of Trump’s immense influence on Twitter. Noting the president’s huge following — he has more than 58 million followers on the social network — Cohen said he was worried about Trump influencing people on social media to go after his loved ones. “When he goes on Twitter, and he starts bringing in my in-laws, my parents, my wife, what does he think is going to happen?” Cohen said. “He’s sending out the same message, that he can do whatever he wants.”On Wednesday morning, Trump tweeted to describe Cohen as a liar, and he isn’t the only politician attacking Cohen on the social network. Rep. Matt Gaetz, a Republican from Florida, tweeted at Cohen on Tuesday, threatening to blackmail him over infidelity. Gaetz has since deleted the tweet and apologized.Cohen said when Trump tweeted that he was a “rat” on Dec. 16, he was suddenly bombarded with hate messages on Twitter and Facebook.”I’ve had to turn over these messages to Secret Service because they are the most vile, disgusting statements that anyone can receive,” Cohen said.’Not fake news. Old news’Rep. Thomas Massie, a Republican from Kentucky, backed WikiLeaks’ argument that Assange had publicly announced the email leaks before Trump’s campaign learned about it. He held up a printout of an article from The Guardian, in which Assange said WikiLeaks had upcoming leaks regarding Clinton. “Mr. Assange reported to the media on June 12 that those emails would be leaked,” Massie said. “I’m not saying you have fake news, I’m saying you have old news.”The flood of Clinton campaign emails played a significant role in the election, both as headline news and the basis for internet conspiracy theories later on. The US government has since said those emails were given to WikiLeaks by Russian hackers attempting to sway the election in Trump’s favor. The testimony marks the first time someone from the president’s inner circle has testified that Trump had knowledge of the emails before they were released. Previously, Stone — who has been indicted for allegedly lying to Congress — denied those connections. The White House, in a statement to CNN, Newsweek and other publications, noted that Cohen is going to prison for lying. “Sadly, he will go before Congress this week and we can expect more of the same,” Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said. “It’s laughable that anyone would take a convicted liar like Cohen at his word, and pathetic to see him given yet another opportunity to spread his lies.”Representatives for the White House, Cohen and Stone didn’t immediately responded to requests for comment.Russian hackers stole hundreds of thousands of emails from the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee, according to indictments from special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. The stolen emails were posted on WikiLeaks, as well as DCLeaks, a page Russian hackers created posing as Americans. The same day that Trump encouraged Russia to hack Clinton’s emails, Russian hackers made their first attempt to spear-phish email accounts from Clinton’s campaign.Below is the opening statement that Cohen submitted to the committee before his hearing. Crude extends gains after surge on shortcovering cold spell

first_imgCrude oil futures extended gains on Monday following a surge at the end of last week on short-covering and fuel demand triggered by freezing weather in parts of the northern hemisphere.Oil prices soared 10% on Friday, one of the biggest daily rallies ever, as bearish traders who had taken out record short positions scrambled to close them, betting the market’s long rout may finally be over.Brent LCOc1 had gained 8 cents to $32.26 a barrel by 0221 GMT after touching $32.69 a barrel earlier in the day. It settled at $32.18 a barrel in the previous session.US crude CLc1 rose 5 cents to $32.24 a barrel, compared with its session-high of $32.64 and previous settlement at $32.19.”A change in investor sentiment was the key factor, with speculative short positions in WTI falling from historically high levels the previous week,” ANZ said in a note on Monday, referring to US West Texas Intermediate crude.”Low crude oil prices continue to negatively impact high cost US oil producers. Indeed, recent Baker Hughes data suggested US oil explorers idled more oil rigs this week.”Reuters market analyst for commodities and energy technicals Wang Tao said on Monday that Brent oil faces resistance at $32.72 per barrel, and may hover below this level for one day or retrace to support at $30.98, before rising again.A massive snowstorm on the US East Coast helped stoke demand for oil for heating, helping push up crude prices. While New York and Philadelphia were getting back to business, Washington was not ready after an historic storm dumped more than 20 inches (51 cm) of snow on the city and nearly three feet (1 metre) in surrounding areas.Asian stocks gained early on Monday, relieved after seeing Wall Street rally on the back of a sharp rise in crude oil prices. The dollar was steady at 118.75 yen after surging 0.9%on Friday, when it touched a two-week peak of 118.88.last_img read more

Firstlook Vijay Varma turns 90s student for Hurdang

first_imgVijay Varma is a name that needs no introduction. Delhi Belly, Dedh Ishqiya, Monsoon Wedding and the latest Gully Boy is a testimony to the powerhouse performer he is. Sinking into the skin of the character, Vijay Varma brings out any character with utmost authenticity and honesty. In continuation of the trend, Vijay Varma has transformed himself as a college student from the 90s for his film – Hurdang.Acing the part of a 90s college student from Allahabad, Vijay is doing his best to add his own nuances to the character. The actor who is currently working on Hurdang in Prayagraj. He is feeling the thrill of working on a period film and though the film isn’t a classic period film, the fact that it’s set in the 90s requires major prep from him, a challenge he has taken up well enough. From understanding the social scenario of the era to its very politics, the actor has undergone a makeover after a few rounds of changes. To be era authentic, Vijay has even grown a moustache. Depending on his character requirement and background, Vijay decided to have a cleaner look. Vijay went through a series of look tests, exchanged notes with the director on how to add to his look. The actor says, “We arrived at the final look after many trials. We wanted to get the milieu right and took references from many real-life personal pictures from the late 80s which the team had gathered for mood boarding.””Sheetal Sharma is the designer on this film and we worked closely over many trials to get the vibe of Loha Singh right. Power and leadership are his main trials and we made sure it reflects in the styling. The script has a lot of answers in explaining the political scenarios of the 1990 and what was the general sense of response by these characters to the times they were living in. Discussions and looking up on history helped in making it more nuanced instead of settling for a uni-dimensional approach to the period,” Varma added.last_img read more
