Dan Cohen AUTHOR Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.) underlined the need to improve military readiness, address the threat of climate change and eliminate waste at the Pentagon, after the House Democratic Conference elected him on Friday to become chairman of the Armed Services Committee. “As chairman, I will work with my colleagues to promote transparency and congressional oversight, enhance military readiness, combat inefficiency and waste at DOD, advance green technology in defense and address the threat climate change poses to our national security, fight for an inclusive military and move towards a responsible approach to nuclear weapons,” Smith said in a written statement. He was widely expected to be named chairman of House Armed Services after serving as the committee’s ranking member.Smith also said he would address the military’s unrealistic set of requirements driving demands for a massive defense budget for fiscal 2020, reported Stars and Stripes.Separately, Smith slammed President Trump’s statement that he is considering declaring a national emergency to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. “Diverting money from these military construction accounts could have substantial impacts for service members at installations across the country and on defense projects that are important in supporting readiness, training, operations, and quality of life for military personnel and their families,” Smith said in a written statement.DOD photo by Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Daniel Hinton

The internationally acclaimed videogame, Minecraft, is going to turn 10-years-old on May 17, and players and developers alike are looking back at the progress the game has made.To celebrate the 10-year anniversary, the game which blew up the internet has been made available on web browsers for free. Classic Minecraft is now available to play through the official Minecraft website. This version goes back 10 years to the historic time when the game took its first baby steps.Featuring a wholesome 32 blocks (most of which are dyed wool) to unleash that creative force inside players, the devs urge fans to “play the original and wonder how it ever got so popular”. This web version is set by default to Creative mode because that is the only mode available. This means no Zombies or Creepers or those weird Ender-things. ‘The Perfect Marionette’ has been created on Minecraft by Uchio TokuraimgurThis sure brings back a wave of nostalgia for someone who played and left the game before the bountiful updates came in. It takes players back to a simpler time when there was no complex crafting system, no villagers to trade/trap and no little piggies to poke. Just a tiny, randomly generated map with a single biome and a whole lot of ocean to surround it.There is a “bonus gift” for players who will return to the site tomorrow. A message at the bottom of the landing page contains a message for visitors: “Want to enjoy three spectacular anniversary sales and a free bonus gift? Return on May 10, 2019, to enjoy savings on Minecraft Marketplace content, Minecraft merch and Minecraft itself!” A screenshot from Minecraft shows a typical forest villageMinecraft WikiMinecraft thrives on its (very passionate) community. Several YouTube channels are dedicated solely to videos featuring various mods and fan-made adventures in its multiplayer mode. Microsoft recently teased a Minecraft mobile app featuring AR technology, more of which will be revealed on the day of the anniversary – May 17. Warren Buffett, founder of Berkshire Hathaway. (File picture)ReutersBillionaire investor Warren Buffett revealed his much-anticipated letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders on Saturday.Buffett’s letter to his company’s shareholders, an annual exercise undertaken for more than 50 years, is a closely watched event on Wall Street as investors parse the statement for insights and wisdom on the economy and financial markets. The entire letter can be found here. Here are some of the key highlights from the 16-page letter:In 2017, Berkshire saw its net worth grow $65.3 billion, boosting its per share book value by 23 percent. Of the total, only $36 billion came from Berkshire’s business operations while the remaining $29 billion was delivered when Congress rewrote the U.S. Tax Code. Buffett flagged risks associated with bonds. He said it is a terrible mistake for investors with long-term horizons – among them, pension funds, college endowments and savings-minded individuals – to measure their investment “risk” by their portfolio’s ratio of bonds to stocks. Often, high-grade bonds in an investment portfolio increase its risk. Buffett listed out fifteen common stock investments that at year-end had the largest market value. The stocks included, American Express, Apple Inc, Bank of America, The Bank of New York Mellon, BYD Co, Charter Communications, The Coca-Cola Co, Delta Airlines, General Motors, The Goldman Sachs Group, Moody’s Corp, Phillips, Southwest Airlines, U.S. Bancorp and Wells Fargo. Buffett said that the company’s search for new stand-alone businesses continues. The key qualities we seek are durable competitive strengths, able and high-grade management, good returns on the net tangible assets required to operate the business, opportunities for internal growth at attractive returns; and, finally, it should be available at a sensible purchase price. Buffett, 87, did not divulge much details on his successor. In January, he had narrowed down the list of people who could replace him to two veteran Berkshire executives, Greg Abel and Ajit Jain. “You and I are lucky to have Ajit and Greg working for us,” Buffett told shareholders at the end of the letter.
Prothom Alo File PhotoA day after issuing warrants for the arrest of three owners of Apan Jewellers, separate courts here on Tuesday sent them to jail in five cases filed for laundering money and dodging tax, reports UNB.Four metropolitan magistrates — Nurunnahar Yeasmin, Satyabrata Shikder, Mazharul Haq and Ahsan Habib — passed the orders when Dildar Ahmed and his two brothers — Gulzar Ahmed and Azad Ahmed — surrendered before the courts seeking bail.Of them, Dildar was sent to jail in three cases filed with Dhanmondi, Ramna and Uttara police stations while his brothers in two cases filed with Gulshan police station.Earlier, Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Nur Nabi issued a warrant on Monday for the arrest of Dildar Ahmed as he did not appear before the court on expiry of his bail granted by the High Court in two cases filed under the Money Laundering Prevention Act and for accumulating illegal wealth.Besides, Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Nurunnahar Yeasmin issued warrants for the arrest of two other owners of the jewellery brand — Gulzar Ahmed and Azad Ahmed – on the same charges on Sunday in the two cases. On 22 August, an HC bench granted anticipatory bail to the three brothers in the two cases filed against them.On 12 August, Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) filed five cases against the three owners of Apan Jewellers after 15 maunds of illegal gold and some diamond jewellery were recovered from its branches.Five CIID assistant revenue officers filed the cases with Gulshan police station, Dhanmondi police station, Ramna police station and Uttara police station following directives of the National Board of Revenue (NBR).Apan Jewellers hit the limelight after the rape of two private university girls by Shafat Ahmed, son of Dildar Ahmed, and his cohort in a Banani hotel came to the fore. One of the rape victims filed a case with Banani police station on 6 May last accusing five people, including Shafat.
Twitter via @CNNEx Trump Campaign Aide Rick GatesRick Gates, a top adviser to the 2016 Trump campaign and close aide of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, is expected to plead guilty in the ongoing Russia probe being led by special counsel Robert Mueller, according to a person close to Gates. The person said Gates is expected to enter the plea as early as Friday. The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity in order to discuss private conversations, said Gates had informed family and friends in a letter about his decision.A plea could signal that he’s planning to cooperate. It would mark the fifth publicly known guilty plea in the probe into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin during the 2016 campaign. The Gates plea would come a day after a federal grand jury in Virginia returned a 32-count indictment against him and Manafort accusing them of tax evasion and bank fraud. It was the second round of charges against the two men.The plea also comes quickly on the heels of a stunning indictment last week that laid out a broad operation of election meddling by Russia, which began in 2014, and employed fake social media accounts and on-the-ground politicking to promote the campaign of Donald Trump, disparage Hillary Clinton and sow division and discord widely among the U.S. electorate.Gates initially pleaded not guilty and has been facing up to 12.5 years in jail — based on a 12-count indictment handed up in October accusing him and Manafort of acting as unregistered foreign agents and conspiring to launder millions of dollars they earned while working on behalf of a pro-Russian Ukrainian political party. His guilty plea will almost certainly reduce the prison sentence he could have faced if convicted at trial of all counts.A sealed charge in the case this week as well as closed-door discussions in recent weeks had brought speculation that a plea deal for Gates or some other development might be near. Gates’ lawyers had filed a motion this month indicating that they had reached “irreconcilable differences” with their client. His new lawyer, veteran Washington white-collar attorney Thomas Green, formally took over Thursday.Green did not respond to a request for comment Friday. As he was kept on house arrest, Gates frequently pleaded with U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson for leniency to attend sporting events with his four children. He recently brought on Green — a high-powered defense attorney, who won a plea deal for former House Speaker Dennis Hastert after he was charged with concealing nearly $1 million of $1.7 million in secret payments to hide allegations of sexual abuse. If Gates agrees to become a cooperating witness as part of a plea deal, he could give Mueller a closer look into Manafort’s years of political consulting work in Ukraine, as well as other events that have sparked the interest of federal investigators.Gates had access at the highest levels of the campaign at the same time that Manafort, Donald Trump Jr. and Jared Kushner met with a team of Russians in Trump Tower in June 2016. He was also in the top ranks of the campaign when then-Sen. Jeff Sessions held a pair of undisclosed meetings with Russian ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak. For a few months in 2016, Gates was indispensable to Trump, leading the ground effort to help Trump win the Republican nomination and flying from state to state to secure Republican delegates in a scramble that lasted all the way until the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. But his power and influence waned once Trump fired Manafort in August 2016 after The Associated Press disclosed how Gates and Manafort covertly directed a Washington lobbying campaign on behalf of Ukrainian interests.Gates survived his mentor’s ouster and worked through the election on Trump’s inaugural committee — but among Trump aides he earned the nickname “the walking dead.” Gates also worked briefly with the outside political groups supporting Trump’s agenda, America First Policies and America First Action, but was pushed out of that job last year.Gates was working for Tom Barrack, a close friend of Trump’s, when he was indicted last October.
