Now the federal government is appealing the victory which won on the Jordan’s Principle. It’s an agreement that the feds have with a handful of provinces stipulating First Nation families will have hospital bills covered and the governments will argue who has to pick up the tab later.“You know one thing? Nadarajah Mathinthiran alias Parithi, an ex-LTTE commander who had left the movement in the early 90’s and later coordinated Tamil organisational political activities in France since 2003, was killed last evening outside the office of the Tamil Coordinating Committee (TCC) in Paris, the Tamil Nwt website quoted news sources in France as saying. The website meanwhile said that people close to the 49-year-old organiser, who was also known as Reagon, blamed the Sri Lankan military establishment for the assassination. “This seems to be a psyop assassination by the Sri Lankan state targeting the political mobilisation of the Tamil diaspora,” Mr Pradeep, an independent political activist based in Paris told TamilNet. The French Police is investigating the killing. Mathinthiran was shot at least three times when he was leaving the office of the TCC around 9:00 p.m. at Pyranees in Paris 20. Two weeks ago, the French legal proceedings sanctioned him a 10 months probation period that would have put him under close monitoring with restricted movement, including electronic monitoring. Reagon took part in the early operations of the LTTE against the Sri Lankan military in Mannaar, Jaffna and Vanni. He was a middle-level commander when he left the LTTE in the early 90’s.In 2003, when the Tiger leadership was engaged in transforming its diaspora network from its earlier structure, Mathinthiran, now named as Parithi was appointed as the coordinator of political and fund-raising activities in France. When the French authorities went on a crackdown of LTTE fundraising activities, Mathinthiran alias Parithi was held under arrest from 2007 to 2010 and was subjected to legal proceedings. He was released in 2010 under several conditions of monitoring by the French. The assassination has come at a time when Tamil groups in Paris were shedding away their internal differences of opinion, diaspora Tamil activists said, passing the entire blame of the assassination on the Sri Lankan military establishment.Mathinthiran was given with the nom de guerre Reagon when he joined the LTTE in 1983. He received his military training in the 2nd batch of the LTTE’s training programme provided by India. Some of his batch mates in the training camp in India were Kumarappa, Bhanu, Ranjan Lala and Vasu, the Tamil Net website said.

Anyone who owns or has used an e-reader like the Amazon Kindle will know how clear and readable text can be on such a display. Images come out looking quite crisp, even if they are devoid of color. And yet those 6-inch displays only have a resolution of 600 x 800 at 167dpi.Epson is working to develop a much higher resolution display using the same e-reader technology from E Ink. The new screen will be 9.68-inches and will sport a resolution of 2400 x 1650 at 300dpi.AdChoices广告While the current e-reader screens may be perfect for reading text, they can’t produce the detail required for industries that use engineering plans and technical diagrams. There’s also benefits of a higher resolution display for rendering Asian character sets, and illustrations. So it’s not just industry, but educational institutions that could benefit from such a display.Wanting to offer the benefits of e-paper, but also requiring that higher resolution for the detail, has led Epson to E Ink’s door ready to create the required new display. While E Ink brings the display technology to the table, Epson has a key element in the form of a high-speed display controller platform allowing not only for fast page renders, but also for handling large files that come hand-in-hand with more detailed documents. Together the meeting of technology from these two firms should mean the highest resolution e-paper yet seen on the market, and hopefully in many new consumer e-readers too.Read more at the Epson press release, via V3Matthew’s OpinionAdding the higher resolution to the display does allow e-readers to do more. High resolution diagrams are one thing, but illustrations as part of the text are a big part of school books, and on the consumer side it means the potential for graphic novels to be offered in a more detailed form, among other things. Before owning a Kindle I thought a 6-inch display would be way too small, but for reading books it isn’t. However, the move to 10-inches coupled with a higher resolution, and hopefully color, makes a lot of sense. iPad has shown that 10-inch is a size that works, and if an e-reader can achieve it while remaining as thin as a Kindle it could be very popular.
‘Game of Thrones’ Targaryen Prequel Series Is Reportedly Coming to HBO‘Game of Thrones’ Star Kit Harington Joins Marvel’s &#… When it comes to pirating television shows, people know what they like and want to see. That’s why it probably comes as no surprise that once again, HBO has declared Game of Thrones the most pirated show of the year. The results come from a report compiled by TorrentFreak, which names Game of Thrones as the most downloaded bit of media on BitTorrent for the fifth year running. I guess it’s safe to say people love Game of Thrones and really hate paying for HBO like everyone else.According to TorrentFreak, the number of downloads was pretty close to 2015’s numbers, with about 350,000 “actively sharing” an episode across multiple torrents. That’s a lot of people. But how many were seeding and how many were leeching? Important points to consider. People hate to seed. Especially when it’s something really hard to find. But I digress. The rest of the list was filled with mediocre shows like The Flash, Arrow, the always-terrible The Big Bang Theory, and more. Unsurprisingly, however, was The Walking Dead at number two and Westworld at number three, shows that people can never stop talking about. It seems everyone is getting their hands on the shows, so the conversation will certainly continue. Lucifer, Suits, and The Grand Tour rounded out the bottom of the list. You might remember reports of Amazon’s The Grand Tour being the most illegally downloaded show of all time. This new info basically refutes that.So what have we learned? People want to get their entertainment cheaply, or at least some of them, and Game of Thrones is still as popular as ever. Maybe with the popularity still at an all-time high, next season can really step it up since it’s been on a downward spiral ever since it started veering away so radically from the books. We’ll just have to wait and see. Stay on target
WEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) – The final step in the pursuit of a degree for some Florida International University graduate students is getting all shook up this weekend. There is no final exam for the first graduating class of FIU’s Academy for International Disaster Preparedness. In what constitutes a first for the academic institution, the 39 students are participating in a full-scale, 48-hour disaster drill simulating a catastrophic earthquake. In the drill, the group is divided in teams that will have to build a base of operations and conduct field assessments.FIU officials praised the participants’ dedication. “These students are the best and so unique. They really come from our community,” said Ruben Almaguer, FIU’s Assistant Vice President for Disaster Management and Emergency Operations. “They’re firefighters, they’re law enforcement officers, they’re in the military, the U.S. Coast Guard. We have a doctor, we have a lawyer, we have other civilians who want to get into this field.”Saturday afternoon, students worked directly with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s Air Rescue and Marine Divisions and the U.S. Coast Guard. They will be transported aboard a Coast Guard vessel and a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue fire boat. They will also assist in aerial damage assessment using a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue helicopter to evaluate a simulated disaster site across Biscayne Bay.Copyright 2019 Sunbeam Television Corp. Oil prices jumped the most in a month, rising more than 4 percent on Thursday, after comments from the Saudi oil minister about possible action to stabilize prices triggered a round of buying and the International Energy Agency forecast crude markets would tighten in the second half of 2016.Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih said OPEC members and non-members would discuss the market situation, including any action that may be required to stabilize prices, during an informal meeting on Sept. 26-28 in Algeria. The comments by the minister of the world’s top oil exporter triggered fund buying and some short covering, giving a boost to prices, traders and brokers said. Many traders remain skeptical of the outcome of the meeting, expecting a repeat of the Doha meeting in April when talks fell through after Saudi Arabia backed out, citing Iran’s refusal to join in a so-called production freeze. The IEA, which advises large developed economies on energy policy, forecast a healthy draw in global oil stocks in the next few months that would help ease a glut that has persisted since 2014 on the back of rising OPEC and non-OPEC supply.”The markets clearly are deriving support from both the IEA report and statements from the Saudi oil minister,” said Andrew Lebow, senior partner at Commodity Research Group in Darien, Connecticut.”In a crude market that has seen a combined increase of 200,000 gross short speculative positions over just the past six weeks, any talk of a potential coordinated effort from producers, no matter how unlikely the prospect, will lead to short covering.”Both benchmarks notched their biggest daily percentage gain in a month. U.S. crude CLc1 settled at $43.49 per barrel, up $1.78 or 4.3 percent, while Brent crude LCOc1 closed $1.99 or 4.5 percent higher at $46.04, after both jumped more than 5 percent during the session. Many analysts say they see oil prices trading within a range for the next few weeks, but if Saudi Arabia talks up the market, the potential for a significant drop in prices are high.”The Saudis benefit from talking this market up … they buy a little time and give the market a chance to acquire better balance,” said Jim Ritterbusch, president of Chicago-based energy advisory Ritterbusch & Associates.”If at the end of the day the Saudis don’t go along with an agreement to cut production, the market will go right down, just like last time.”U.S. refined products futures, including gasoline RBc1 and diesel HOc1, jumped after Motiva Enterprises LLC’s [MOTIV.UL] 235,000 barrel per day Convent, Louisiana, refinery was evacuated due to a fire at a hydrocracker around midday on Thursday.Ultra-low sulfur diesel futures soared 5 percent to a session high of $1.3934 a gallon, their highest since July 21 after the news.Diesel crack spreads 1HOc1-Clc1, a key measure of margins for refiners, jumped as much as 7.7 percent to a high of $14.72 during the session.

Prothom Alo File PhotoA day after issuing warrants for the arrest of three owners of Apan Jewellers, separate courts here on Tuesday sent them to jail in five cases filed for laundering money and dodging tax, reports UNB.Four metropolitan magistrates — Nurunnahar Yeasmin, Satyabrata Shikder, Mazharul Haq and Ahsan Habib — passed the orders when Dildar Ahmed and his two brothers — Gulzar Ahmed and Azad Ahmed — surrendered before the courts seeking bail.Of them, Dildar was sent to jail in three cases filed with Dhanmondi, Ramna and Uttara police stations while his brothers in two cases filed with Gulshan police station.Earlier, Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Nur Nabi issued a warrant on Monday for the arrest of Dildar Ahmed as he did not appear before the court on expiry of his bail granted by the High Court in two cases filed under the Money Laundering Prevention Act and for accumulating illegal wealth.Besides, Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Nurunnahar Yeasmin issued warrants for the arrest of two other owners of the jewellery brand — Gulzar Ahmed and Azad Ahmed – on the same charges on Sunday in the two cases. On 22 August, an HC bench granted anticipatory bail to the three brothers in the two cases filed against them.On 12 August, Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) filed five cases against the three owners of Apan Jewellers after 15 maunds of illegal gold and some diamond jewellery were recovered from its branches.Five CIID assistant revenue officers filed the cases with Gulshan police station, Dhanmondi police station, Ramna police station and Uttara police station following directives of the National Board of Revenue (NBR).Apan Jewellers hit the limelight after the rape of two private university girls by Shafat Ahmed, son of Dildar Ahmed, and his cohort in a Banani hotel came to the fore. One of the rape victims filed a case with Banani police station on 6 May last accusing five people, including Shafat.
Share ALEX SMITH / WIKIMEDIA COMMONSMore than two weeks after the death of Border Patrol Agent Rogelio Martinez, questions remain about how he and a fellow agent were seriously injured while on patrol around Van Horn in west Texas. After the incident, prominent politicians wasted no time weighing in, saying the officers had been attacked. Sen.Ted Cruz called it a “stark reminder of the ongoing threat that an unsecure border poses to the safety of our communities.” President Donald Trump tweeted “We will, and must, build the wall!”The investigation was quickly taken over by the FBI, which steps in whenever there’s a potential assault on a federal officer. Since then, they’ve released few details on the case.Because this is a sensitive story, few people are willing talk about it on tape. But I did catch Rush Carter, who is with the Big Bend Border Patrol sector, where Martinez worked.“The lack of answers makes it really tough…as we move forward and have to take care of our jobs and mourn the loss of Agent Martinez all at the same time,” Carter says.He says agents are eager to hear exactly what happened that night. They’re patrolling as usual, albeit…”with a little bit of sadness in our heart… We still are waiting on the FBI to fill in the blanks because everything else is gonna be speculation.”And here’s been a lot of speculation. Almost immediately after Martinez died, politicians started tweeting condolences, and stating he’d been attacked. Governor Abbott said the agent was murdered and offered a reward to help catch the killer. Cruz and Trump also said Martinez was killed. Trump tweeted “We will seek out and bring to justice those responsible.”Around the same time, I talked to Chris Cabrera with the border patrol union.“What we understand from our agents that responded is Agent Martinez and his partner were struck repeatedly in the head and face with a rock or rocks by either one or a number of individuals,” Cabrera says. Here’s the thing: None of this has been confirmed by the FBI…nothing beyond Martinez and his partner having head injuries. At a press conference a few days after the incident, FBI Agent Emerson Buie chose his words carefully.“We are investigating this matter as a potential assault on a federal officer. And we’re trying to gather the facts. And if the facts support that then we will pursue it legally. If they support that the incident was caused by something else, then we’ll present that,” Buie said. The FBI representatives wouldn’t talk on tape for this story. But they did tell me they’re continuing to follow up on all tips from the public. The surviving agent working with Martinez that night hasn’t been named. Reportedly, he’s suffering from memory loss. And officials are raising doubts about those early claims that this was an attack. The Culberson County sheriff was one of the first responders on the scene. He’s said the evidence doesn’t point to violence – and that Martinez might have fallen to his death. So why, more than two weeks later, are there still so few answers? According to Victor Manjarrez, it’s not totally unusual. Manjarrez is a retired border patrol chief, now with the Center for Law and Human Behavior at UT El Paso.“What makes it so difficult in cases of border patrol agents and in this particular case in Van Horn is they’re so remote areas,” Manjarrez says.Plus, there weren’t any witnesses. Manjarrez says it’s also possible the scene was disturbed as first responders rushed in to help.“You come in and your first mindset’s…where’s that agent or officer that’s down? How can I render assistance?” he says, rather than thinking about preserving evidence for a future investigation. But what is more unusual about Agent Martinez’s death are those immediate statements from top politicians. Alfredo Corchado is covering this story for the Dallas Morning News. Corchado’s been reporting on the border for decades and says he’s never seen anything like this.“Where there’s a real rush to judgment. I think what shocked me from day one, from the moment it happened, was sense of certainty that this had happened, this was the way it happened…without any real factual information,” Corchado says. And that could explain why the FBI is being so cautious.“How do you come back after you have the governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, you have the senator Ted Cruz, you have President Trump, you know, with such certainty that this is what happened. I mean how do you contradict them? And I think the best way, at least from what I’m told, is you have to be 120 percent accurate. I mean you have to get to the truth,” Corchado says. One other possibility Corchado has heard from sources is that Agent Martinez and his partner might have been sideswiped by a tractor trailer. It’s a theory more people are considering, especially since the FBI announced late last week that they’re expanding their investigation. The FBI is now running digital billboards in four border states, seeking out drivers who passed through the Van Horn area the night both agents were injured. FBI officials say could take weeks or even months before they can issue a full report.
00:00 /00:46 Harris County may soon make it a lot easier for residents to vote on Election Day. County Clerk Diane Trautman is set to unveil a plan for countywide voting centers Tuesday at Harris County Commissioners Court.Trautman wants to make it possible for anyone to vote on Election Day at any of Harris County’s 700-plus polling locations. Currently, county residents have multiple options during early voting, but on Election Day, they can only cast a ballot in their home precinct.“I witnessed personally at several different polling locations on Election Day voters being turned away because they were confused about where their assigned voting location was or something changed or they just didn’t have the information,” Trautman said. “If you multiply those 700 locations times anywhere from 10 to 100 people being turned away, that’s a lot of disenfranchised voters.”Trautman made transitioning to Election Day voting centers one of her top campaign pledges when she ran for election last year. Fifty-two other Texas counties already operate such voting centers. This week’s commissioners court will open with a round of public hearings to determine whether Harris County becomes number 53. When representing the Switzerland of Central America in the midst of a major diplomatic battle between powers to the north and south of you, it may be best to keep your mouth shut.Costa Rica’s Foreign Minister Manuel González announced Wednesday afternoon that he was dismissing the country’s ambassador to Venezuela, Federico Picado Gómez. Picado found himself in hot water this week after voicing support for the Venezuelan government in an interview published in the daily La Nación.González said Picado violated protocol by not asking permission from the Foreign Ministry to do the interview. Still, the minister said in a statement that Picado “is an excellent professional and political analyst with wide knowledge of international affairs and recognized personal virtues.”Picado’s trouble began Sunday when La Nación published his emailed responses to questions from one of its reporters. Picado wrote that he observed a free press in Venezuela, and he blamed the country’s high inflation and shortage of basic goods on plunging petroleum prices and political maneuvers by “big business” looking to destabilize the Venezuelan government. The diplomat also said he thought Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was right to ask for, and receive, extraordinary powers to bypass the country’s legislature in order to respond to U.S. President Barack Obama’s declaration of a “national emergency” to deal with the “threat” of Venezuela. In the wake of the interview, reporters questioned Costa Rican President Luis Guillermo Solís about the appropriateness of Picado’s statements. They also questioned Solis’ appointment of Ambassador Picado, who studied in the former Soviet Union and has previously written admiringly of the vast socialist makeover initiated in Venezuela by former President Hugo Chávez.Solís mostly defended his ambassador during his weekly press conference on Tuesday.“One doesn’t have to be neutral to be an ambassador,” Solís told reporters. He said ambassadors should be chosen based on their diplomatic talents, not their political ideology.Still, Solís sought to separate Picado’s opinions from the country’s official position on South America’s most troubled country.“In the case of Venezuela, the only spokesman authorized to give statements about the issue is the foreign minister,” Solís said. “We’re centralizing all statements there precisely because the current situation is so delicate.”On Monday, the Foreign Ministry reaffirmed Minister González’s position regarding Venezuela, which he voiced last week at a meeting of the Organization of American States in Washington, D.C.“The situation in Venezuela requires us to stay alert to the evolution of events and to clearly signal the importance, in a full democracy, of exercising the democratic balance of power and generating appropriate conditions so that the opposition can carry out its actions within the framework of legality and respect.”Tensions have escalated between the U.S. and Venezuela over the past month, forcing nations friendly with both countries, like Costa Rica, to walk a fine diplomatic line.In late February, Venezuelan President Maduro announced mandatory visas for all U.S. citizens as a way to “control” U.S. interference. Soon afterward, Maduro ordered the U.S. Embassy to reduce its staff from 100 to 17 officials. The following week, on March 9, Obama ordered the freezing of U.S. properties and bank accounts of seven Venezuelan officials — most of them accused of participating in the 2014 crackdown on opposition protests in which more than 40 people died.In the wake of the new sanctions announced by the U.S., some Latin American countries backed Venezuela and indicated that the U.S. is inappropriately interfering in the country’s affairs. But Costa Rica has thus far remained more neutral. The order recalling Ambassador Picado is effective April 1. Picado arrived at his post in January. Economy Home Prices HOUSING Wells Fargo 2018-08-30 Seth Welborn August 30, 2018 787 Views in Daily Dose, Data, News The Economy and the Housing Market The economy is improving, with the quality of jobs increasing and incomes rising, according to Mark Vitner, Managing Director and Senior Economist at Wells Fargo Securities. Wages are rising by around 3.5 to four percent per year, and Vitner notes that consumer confidence is up, with those numbers at the highest level in 18 years. “Job growth is stronger, the quality of jobs that are being added is better, and that incomes are rising,” said Vitner. However, he noted that the current housing market has not caught up, and is the economy’s “most troubling” factor.“The recovery in housing has been very slow to get back on track,” said Vitner in an interview with CNBC. “The numbers are all moving in the right direction, they’re just not moving very quickly.”“I do think housing will get stronger later this year,” Vitner added.Data from the First American Real House Price Index shows that home price increases have indeed slowed down.
