Lewis Hamilton not surprised by Nico Rosberg retirement

first_imgLewis Hamilton will miss Nico Rosberg next season but he was also one of the few people unsurprised on Friday by his Mercedes team mate’s decision to retire only days after winning the Formula One championship.”This is the first time he’s won (a title) in 18 years, hence why it was not a surprise that he decided to stop,” the triple world champion told reporters ahead of the governing FIA’s gala prize-giving in Vienna.”He’s also got a family to focus on, and wants more children, and Formula One takes so much of your time. Will I miss the rivalry? Of course.” (Lewis Hamilton one of the best, but no friend: Nico Rosberg)Rosberg, the 31-year-old son of 1982 champion Keke, won the championship in Abu Dhabi on Sunday and said he decided on Monday that he would go out on top and enjoy time with his wife and baby daughter.”I’ve achieved this childhood dream now and I am not willing to do that sort of commitment again for another year. And I am not interested in coming fourth or whatever. I am a fighter and I want to win,” said the German.”So, not interested to do that again, don’t want to do it again, and so I have decided to follow my heart and my heart has told me to stop there, call it a day and go on to other things.” (F1 bosses vote Lewis Hamilton best driver, Nico Rosberg third)”It feels wonderful and it feels right,” added Rosberg. “My wife Vivian is also very excited. She’ll have her husband back and I’ll be a dad again … which is going to be wonderful.”advertisementHamilton and Rosberg have been friends and rivals since their teenage days in karting, with the Briton beating him to the Formula One championship in 2014 and 2015.Each has a benchmark for the other throughout their careers, the man they measure themselves against, and Hamilton recognised he would miss the German. (Nico Rosberg deserved his title, says Lewis Hamilton)”We started out when we were 13 and we’d always talked about being champions,” he said. “When I joined this team, Nico was there, which was again something we talked about when we were kids.””It’s going to be very, very strange and it will be sad not to have him in the team next year. The sport will miss him and I wish him all the best.” (Nico Rosberg shakes off Lewis Hamilton’s shadow)”Of course it is a shame that he won’t allow me to take it (the title) back or fight to take it back but that is his choice and I respect his decision: go out on top while you can.”Hamilton said he did not care who Mercedes chose as his team mate, providing they had equal terms.”It doesn’t matter who…I’ll race them, I’m here to race,” he said.last_img read more

Clippers’ Williams Becomes NBA Bench Points Leader in Win (Vid)

first_imgLOS ANGELES (AP) — Lou Williams said it best after becoming the NBA’s career leader in points off the bench.“Any time you can say of all time next to your name, it’s special,” he said. The 13-year guard scored 34 points to pass Dell Curry as the Los Angeles Clippers routed the Boston Celtics 140-115 on Monday night for their fifth straight win.Williams came into the game needing 28 points to pass Curry, who had 11,147 bench points. He surpassed Curry with 9:53 remaining in the fourth quarter with a driving layup.According to the Elias Sports Bureau, starters and reserves were tracked in box scores beginning with the 1970-71 season.“Being a sixth man and a career bench player, to have an opportunity to have something like that is special,” Williams said. “I’ve just continued to play aggressive. The shots have really been falling the last couple games.”It is also Williams’ eighth game this season and 29th in his career with 30 or more points off the bench.“It’s amazing just watching him play. Even tonight, just his pace and his speed,” Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. “The way Lou does it with his size and how often he gets in the paint and finishes over big men is amazing.””I wouldn’t want to do it with another group of guys.”Lou Williams says it’s his @LAClippers teammates that made tonight so special!?: @JaredSGreenberg pic.twitter.com/RMEDEku5pf— NBA TV (@NBATV) March 12, 2019Williams, who was 14 of 20 from the field, wasn’t the only Clipper who was hot from the field. We shot the ball well, moved the ball and played at an amazing pace,” Rivers said. “I thought the defense early on was terrific and that got us out running. We really believed that we had to turn this into a pace game to win and I thought we did that.”Terry Rozier led the Celtics with 26 points while Jaylen Brown added 22 and Kyrie Irving 18. Boston had a three-game winning streak snapped as it was trying to become the second Eastern Conference team this season to win all four games in California. It is the most points the Celtics have allowed in Brad Stevens’ six seasons as coach and only the fourth time since 1990 they have allowed 140 or more in a regular-season game.“It was a combination of our defense abandoning us and them playing terrific,” Stevens said. “We couldn’t get stops. We talked about trying to guard different ways when we should have just do better what we do. We’ll move on.”Los Angeles Clippers’ Lou Williams, left, and Montrezl Harrell celebrate a basket made by Williams during the second half of an NBA basketball game against the Boston Celtics, Monday, March 11, 2019, in Los Angeles. BAHAMAS Strong Women Strong Families Strong Communities

first_img Related Items: Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp#Bahamas, December 8, 2017 – Nassau – The Department of Gender and Family Affairs, Ministry of Social Services and Urban Development hosted several activities to commemorate ‘National Women’s Week 2017’ being observed in The Bahamas November 26 through December 9.   The activities reflect the progress of Bahamian women, celebrate their accomplishments and address social issues impacting them. The week incorporates the annual observance of National Women’s Day, November 26, with recognition of the 25th anniversary of that day.    This year in The Bahamas, the observance has been extended an additional week.   The theme for the week is “Strong Women.  Strong Families.  Strong Communities.”Among the activities were an awareness raising/report sharing session on The Bahamas’ Sixth Periodic Report to Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), November 28, and a special school assembly at Doris Johnson High School, November 29.Panelists in the CEDAW discussion were Ambassador Rhoda Jackson, Acting Permanent Secretary, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Marion Bethel, The Bahamas’ candidate for (CEDAW); Donna Nicolls, Bahamas Crisis Centre; and Deandra Cartwright, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The event was attended by the Director of Gender and Family Affairs, Gaynel Curry; government officials, representatives of non-governmental organizations including Zonta Club of The Bahamas.CEDAW is an international treaty adopted in 1979 by the United Nations General Assembly.   Described as an international bill of rights for women, it was instituted on September 3, 1981 and has been ratified by 189 states. In her remarks, Ms. Jackson said CEDAW is much more than a legal document to be discussed by policy makers and lawyers.    S he said it represents a commitment by a Government to its people, which seeks full respect for the rights and dignity of women in the country, and is therefore an instrument that belongs to the people it is intended to protect. As The Bahamas celebrates the advances to protect women’s rights in the past two decades, Ms. Jackson urged those present to remember the shortcomings that still exist and give those areas priority.“One of the most notable inadequacies is the need for additional changes to The Bahamas’ Constitution relative to gender equality.   This is paramount to fulfilling the Convention’s mandate to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women.   As long as gender disparities exist, The Bahamas would not have lived up to the mandate the country pledged to uphold, when we signed onto CEDAW.“I am, therefore, pleased by the presence of representatives from civil society and public sector organizations here today.   Public fora of this nature should be at the helm of the engagement process.  The government should strive to continue ongoing dialogue and collaboration with national and international women’s organizations, schools, churches and religious groups, also, devising a plan for expansion of the role of the two latter groups.   Educational campaigns that generate awareness of women’s issues and also the Convention will form an integral part of combating the ills that affect women, particularly since educational campaigns in schools will target both girls and boys, who are armed with useful instructions which become extremely meaningful as they become women and men,” she said.In her overview, Ms. Marion Bethel urged civil society groups to hold the government accountable for the advancement of the optional protocol tool of the CEDAW Convention, which allows improvements in human rights.Shonel Ferguson, MP for Fox Hill, addressed the special assembly at Doris Johnson Senior High. S  he told the students that they can determine the path that they want their lives to take.  She reminded them that they are created to succeed, designed to win and equipped to overcome.  The assembly was attended by IDB representatives, Mrs. Patricia Minnis, wife of Prime Minister Hubert Minnis; senators and education officials. Ramona man facing prison for selling heroin that led to fatal overdose

first_img Categories: Local San Diego News FacebookTwitter Posted: June 25, 2019 Ramona man facing prison for selling heroin that led to fatal overdose June 25, 2019 KUSI Newsroom SAN DIEGO ( KUSI) – A Ramona man is facing at least 20 years in federal prison for selling heroin that resulted in a 23-year-old man’s fatal overdose, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.Maxwell Joseph Gaffney, 25, was convicted late Monday of distribution of heroin resulting in death in connection with the Feb. 17, 2017, death of Kyle J. Rodriguez.Text messages and emails presented at trial showed that Gaffney sold about half a gram of black tar heroin to Rodriguez just hours before his girlfriend found him collapsed in the bathroom of his parents’ Ramona home.Rodriguez was instructed by Gaffney via text to leave money for the drugs inside Gaffney’s mailbox, according to prosecutors.Despite his problems with addiction, prosecutors said Rodriguez had achieved “months of sobriety” prior to his death, as confirmed by regular random drug screenings.Gaffney’s attorneys argued that Rodriguez had another source of heroin that supplied him with the fatal dose, though prosecutors said no such other supplier could be found through a search of Rodriguez’s cell phone.A federal jury convicted Gaffney after about two hours of deliberations, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. He’s slated to be sentenced Sept. 23.“These purveyors of poisons are killing our citizens and tearing apart the fabric of our families,” U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer said. “We must continue to combat the opioid crisis by every possible means at our disposal.” KUSI Newsroom, last_img read more

Did Blender Blur AdEdit Line

first_imgSince its inception in 1999, Blender magazine has tried to distinguish itself as an alternative to the Rolling Stone establishment of rock journalism. Now it appears to be following Rolling Stone in blurring the advertising-editorial line.In its January-February issue, Blender published the “2008 Rock & Roll User’s Guide,” a 16-page new music preview sponsored by Sync, Microsoft’s in-car voice-activated technology. In it, a small logo that reads “Presented by Sync/Powered by Microsoft” appears on five of the section’s 10 editorial pages, with the other six pages devoted to Sync-related ads. Four of those logos ask readers to log onto fordvehicles.com/sync for free MP3 downloads. “I would say that this is a clear violation of our guidelines,” American Society of Magazine Editors executive director Marlene Kahan told FOLIO: on Monday. According to the American Society of Magazine Editors, “sponsorship language (ie, “sponsored by,” “presented by,” etc.) should not appear in connection with regularly occurring editorial features” unless the editorial content “is labeled ‘Advertisement’ or ‘Promotion’ in a type size as prominent as the magazine’s normal body type.” [SEE: ASME Guidelines.]A spokesperson for Blender said the section was purely editorial and that the preview was written prior to selling the sponsorship. A spokesperson for the Alpha Media Group, the owner of Blender and Maxim, declined to comment on the details of the sponsorship, and said that the company is commited to adhering to the guidelines set forth by ASME.The Blender feature comes on the heels of a class action lawsuit filed by 185 indie rock bands in December against Rolling Stone over a sponsored nine-page pull-out spread that the bands said used their names without permission.Five of those bands represented in the class action suit appear in the Blender preview. Representatives for My Morning Jacket, one of the bands appearing in both, declined to comment. The Rolling Stone suit followed a separate lawsuit filed by attorney generals in eight states against R.J. Reynolds—the section’s sponsor—claiming the company illegally used cartoons in an advertorial to sell cigarettes. Rolling Stone said the cartoons were part of its editorial treatment—and not R.J. Reynolds’ idea.RELATED DISCUSSION: Does Anyone Care About ASME Guidelines?last_img read more

How to play Minecraft for free without downloading

first_imgThe internationally acclaimed videogame, Minecraft, is going to turn 10-years-old on May 17, and players and developers alike are looking back at the progress the game has made.To celebrate the 10-year anniversary, the game which blew up the internet has been made available on web browsers for free. Classic Minecraft is now available to play through the official Minecraft website. This version goes back 10 years to the historic time when the game took its first baby steps.Featuring a wholesome 32 blocks (most of which are dyed wool) to unleash that creative force inside players, the devs urge fans to “play the original and wonder how it ever got so popular”. This web version is set by default to Creative mode because that is the only mode available. This means no Zombies or Creepers or those weird Ender-things. ‘The Perfect Marionette’ has been created on Minecraft by Uchio TokuraimgurThis sure brings back a wave of nostalgia for someone who played and left the game before the bountiful updates came in. It takes players back to a simpler time when there was no complex crafting system, no villagers to trade/trap and no little piggies to poke. Just a tiny, randomly generated map with a single biome and a whole lot of ocean to surround it.There is a “bonus gift” for players who will return to the site tomorrow. A message at the bottom of the landing page contains a message for visitors: “Want to enjoy three spectacular anniversary sales and a free bonus gift? (AP Photo/Mosa’ab Elshamy) The fate of the 56-year old property — which originally housed the offices of the Cairo municipality — has been a contentious issue, with various government bodies bickering over its future. Rights groups and the family of the building’s architect have campaigned to stop the demolition.Mahmoud M. Riad, the grandson of the architect and himself an architect, said the building was registered with the government as a landmark in the mid-2000s as one of the first to blend modernist architecture with art-deco, and Arab styles. The demolition violates the law on dealing with registered landmarks, Riad said, explaining that an earlier attempt to demolish the building was stalled.“There are a lot of different factors that make this building an iconic one that needs to be preserved and adoptively used,” said Riad, who is collecting signatures on a petition to stop the demolition. “It is one of the most studied pan-Arab modernist buildings. It started a new wave by Egyptian architects who were trying to create a new identity.”The deputy governor of Cairo told the state-owned Al-Ahram Online site that the municipality had issued the demolition permits.
